Crystal Black Caridina
Crystal Black Shrimp are one of those species that instantly catch the eye. Their striking contrast of deep black and bright white markings gives them a bold, elegant look that stands out beautifully against plants, moss, and natural aquascapes. Originally developed through selective breeding of Caridina cantonensis, they’ve become a favourite among shrimp keepers who appreciate both their beauty and the challenge of keeping Caridina species.
Crystal Blacks thrive best in soft, slightly acidic water and well-established aquariums rich in biofilm and grazing surfaces. A mature tank with plenty of moss, leaf litter, or fine plants will allow them to feel secure and display natural behaviour. Like most shrimp, they spend their day grazing continuously on microorganisms and leftover food in the aquarium.
At H&K Aquatics, our Crystal Blacks are raised in carefully maintained shrimp tanks and offered in a range of grades so hobbyists can choose the style that suits their aquarium. Lower grades tend to show more black coverage, while higher grades display thicker, brighter white patterns with distinctive markings that collectors love.
Peaceful and fascinating to watch, Crystal Black Shrimp make a wonderful addition to dedicated shrimp tanks or calm community aquariums with other gentle species. Over time, a healthy colony will breed and gradually fill the tank with new generations, creating a constantly evolving display of unique patterns.
Whether you’re starting your first Caridina colony or adding new genetics to an established line, Crystal Black Shrimp bring contrast, character, and endless interest to the planted aquarium. 🦐💙
