Bringing home new shrimp is exciting, but they’re sensitive to sudden changes in water. Proper acclimation gives them the best chance of thriving in your aquarium. Follow this simple step-by-step guide to safely introduce your Neocaridina or Caridina shrimp.
Why Acclimation Matters
Shrimp are highly sensitive to changes in:
- Temperature
- pH
- Hardness (GH/KH)
- TDS (total dissolved solids)
Even small differences can shock them. Slow acclimation reduces stress and prevents losses.
Step-by-Step Acclimation
1. Float the Bag
- Place the sealed shrimp bag in your tank for 20–30 minutes.
- This equalises the temperature gradually.
2. Open and Secure the Bag
- Open the bag and roll down the edges so it floats like a bowl.
- Alternatively, empty the shrimp and bag water into a clean container.
3. Drip Acclimation (Best Method)
- Use airline tubing and tie a loose knot.
- Start a siphon from your aquarium into the shrimp container.
- Aim for a slow drip — about 2–3 drops per second.
- Allow at least 1–2 hours for the water volume to double or triple.
4. Transfer Shrimp (Not the Water)
- Gently net the shrimp and place them into your tank.
- Avoid adding bag water to your aquarium, as it may contain waste from transit.
5. Lights Off & Minimal Disturbance
- Keep aquarium lights off for a few hours.
- This reduces stress and helps them settle in.
Quick Tips for Success
✅ Always test your water first — stable, clean water is essential.
✅ Shrimp prefer tanks with plants, moss, and hiding places.
✅ Don’t feed them on the first day — let them graze naturally.
Final Thoughts
With the right acclimation process, your shrimp will settle quickly and start exploring their new home. Healthy acclimation = thriving colonies.
